Women's Soccer Edges Compton, 1-0
While every South Coast Conference match continues to be a battle for the Pasadena City College women's soccer team, the Lancers understand the importance of victories over ties. A win in a SCC match is worth three points in the standings as compared to ties that equal one point.
On Friday afternoon, the Lancers plugged away, trying to create scoring chances. Finally in the 74th minute, PCC hit paydirt after three successive shots. Vania Ovando's initial attempt hit the crossbar, then Alexandra Dreves headed the rebound which hit the post. Mallory Gutierrez got the second rebound and knocked in the game-winning goal as the Lancers blanked host El Camino College-Compton Center, 1-0.
Gutierrez picked up her fifth goal of the season as the Lancers improved to 7-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in SCC play. Sophomore goalie Yvette Hernandez only had to make one save to record her fourth shutout and the team's fifth whitewash of the season. Hernandez hasn't allowed a goal in each of her last three starts as she has been part of a two-goalie tandem all season with freshman Sarah Wallick. The netminders have alternated every match, playing all 90 minutes in their respective starts.
Hernandez' aggressive play in goal has complemented the stalwart performances of defenders Lisa Kelley, Analuisa Castro, Amy Wallace, and Brittany Austin. PCC Head Coach Randy Lilavois also cited strong play from reserves Jenne Jasper and Sarah Carretino.
The Lancers, who have been plagued by injuries all season, received another blow with top-scoring forward Stephanie Gutierrez suffering a minor-grade concussion in the team's previous match v. El Camino. Gutierrez did not play v. Compton.
PCC hosts Long Beach City College Tuesday, Oct. 26 in a 1 p.m. conference match at Robinson Stadium.
