Sports in the NewsTwo Lancers Named To Women's Basketball 2010 Academic All-State Team
Two Pasadena City College players, starting guard Anna Shahinian and reserve center Lora Benedetti, were selected to the five-player, 2010 California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Team this week. Shahinian was an All-South Coast Conference Second Team selection in her freshman season. She led the Lancers in free throw shooting (.719 percentage), 3-point baskets made (49) and averaged 11.8 points per game. The 6-foot tall Benedetti supplied valuable minutes off the bench as a defensive-minded post player. The two Lancers helped PCC finish 25-5 overall and advance to the CCCAA State Tournament quarterfinals. Shahinian is from Glendale High while Benedetti is a product of La Canada High. Both players are expected back for their sophomore seasons on the 2010-2011 Lancers. "One of the great challenges for student-athletes is to maintain their grades during the sports season," said PCC Head Coach Joe Peron. "The players who made this academic team are ultimate students first. They played hard on the floor, but worked even harder in the classroom. To have two players make the squad is truly an honor for us." 2010 CCCWBCA Academic All-State Team Alyssa Hanson Orange Coast College G 4.0 gpa Anna Shahinian Pasadena City College G 3.86 gpa Rochelle Welsh Monterey Peninsula College F 3.85 gpa Erika Ward Ventura College G 3.68 gpa Lora Benedetti Pasadena City College C 3.68 gpa [Photo--Lora Benedetti (left) and Anna Shahinian (right)]
