Women's Cagers Start 2010-2011 Season By Topping Taft, 72-48
The Pasadena City College women's basketball team didn't receive the type of individual performances Friday night that have historically been present during their success over the past seven years. However, the host team had contributions from all 15 players and the combined effort was more than enough in defeating Taft College, 72-48, in the season-opening Hilton Garden Inn Classic.
The Lancers (1-0) next face Chaffey College Saturday, Nov. 6 in a 7 p.m. semifinals game. In other Hilton tourney games Friday, Chaffey downed Southwestern, 76-54; Cypress defeated San Diego City, 72-46; and Los Angeles Southwest beat Glendale, 54-37.
Against Taft, PCC was led by returning point guard Stephanie DeFrance, who scored 11 points and added six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Letterman center Dominique Scott also netted 11 points while transfer guard Desiree Strings had a strong PCC debut with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Eleven Lancers reached the scoreboard. PCC led 35-31 at halftime and Taft cut it to 37-35 early in the second. The Lancers then went on an 11-0 run capped by DeFrance's steal and layup to pull away.
Danielle Muepo, Marquetta Stokes, and Destinee Sellers each scored six points and grabbed six rebounds in their freshman debuts, showing another example of the team's depth.
If PCC defeats Chaffey, it would play the winner of the LA Southwest v. Cypress semifinal on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the championship game.
