Goalie Hernandez Record Shutout Streak Snapped; Women's Soccer Falls To ELAC, 2-1 image

Pasadena City College women's soccer goalie Yvette Hernandez reached a personal shutout streak unrivaled in the school's 14-year history of playing the sport. The sophomore Hernandez, who had recorded shutouts in each of her last five matches, surrendered two goals as East Los Angeles College solved the brilliant netminder in defeating the Lancers, 2-1, Tuesday. The South Coast Conference game was the home finale for PCC.

Hernandez's streak ended at 490 minutes (covering a span of seven matches) when ELAC's Stephanie Duron sent a lead pass to Iliana Medina, who sent a low shot from 15 yards out to beat Hernandez in the 16th minute. Hernandez has posted six shutouts this season, one shy of the school record of seven set by both Andrea Otero (1999) and Lauren Britt (2003).

Ironically, Britt is an assistant goalie coach on this year's Lancers.

The Lancers are 7-6-6 overall and 3-5-5 in conference play.

Pasadena broke a shutout streak of its own, finally scoring after being blanked in each of the last four matches. In the 48th minute, sophomore Cristina Tachiquin snuck through the Huskies' defense and made a nifty deke to her right on a defender before firing in her first goal of the season.

East LA (14-4-2, 8-3-2 in conference play) would score the game-winner in the 71st minute when Duron sent a low rolling shot into the corner to beat a diving Hernandez. In the 59th minute, Hernandez robbed Duron on a close-range shot, diving to make the save. Overall, Hernandez made nine saves as East LA outshout the Lancers, 18-9.

The Lancers played without sweeper Lisa Kelley and top playmaker Vania Ovando, both out with injuries, but Chanel Lewis stepped in to play admirably in the middle of the defense. Tachiquin and Joleen Galeazzi-Pimentel created scoring opportunities, but PCC had few quality chances in the match.

In a SCC match played Nov. 5, PCC played to a 0-0 tie at Los Angeles Harbor College. Hernandez made four saves in the draw. On Nov. 2 at Mt. San Antonio College, the Lancers were handed a 3-0 defeat.

The team will play its season finale Thursday, Nov. 11 at El Camino College. Match time is 1 p.m.
