Women's Basketball Goes 3-0 At Rose City Classic, Now 10-1
The only thing missing from the 13th Rose City Classic for the Pasadena City College women's basketball team was a team trophy. The lone squad to win three games in the nine-game, round-robin tourney, the Lancers looked every bit like a champion team during a 72-53 triumph over the defending state champion Ventura College Pirates Sunday night.
The Lancers, ranked No. 2 in the current state poll, improved to 10-1 overall, extending winning streaks of five games overall and six in a row on their home court--Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
PCC won 10 of the previous 12 Rose City Classics, but saw this year's tournament condensed from a traditional eight-team tourney to six teams due to some last-minute dropouts by teams originally committed to play. The RCC is expected to go back to eight teams next season.
Against Ventura, the Lancers mounted a 38-16 halftime lead and never let their huge lead get below 13 points in the second half. Anna Shahinian led PCC with 15 points and Marquetta Stokes added 12 points. Dominique Scott produced another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Scott, a sophomore center who scored 56 points and grabbed 30 rebounds in the three weekend games, was named Rose City Classic MVP while Shahinian and reserve center Tonisha Lacey also were picked to the all-tournament team. In the tourney, Shahinian, a sophomore guard, scored 33 points and made 10 steals while the freshman Lacey totaled 23 points and 22 rebounds.
In defeating Ventura, Vera Machado and Bri'ale McCoy each scored eight points off the bench. Point guards Stephanie DeFrance (seven points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals) and Desiree Strings (four points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals) both had strong all-around performances.
For the Pirates (8-5), Blayke Hudson scored a team-high 13 points. In Sunday's other Rose City Classic games, LA Southwest downed Rio Hondo, 61-51, and West Los Angeles outscored MiraCosta, 66-55.
