Men's Basketball Mired In Slump
The Pasadena City College men's basketball team lost its fourth straight game Wednesday, eliminated from the Citrus Holiday Classic tournament by San Diego City College, 78-62.
The Lancers (5-8 overall) have won only once in the past seven games after opening the season with a promising 4-2 mark. Against SDCC, just six PCC players scored although four were in double figures, led by sophomore guard Shawn Hampton with 19 points. Hampton sank 12 of 14 from the free throw line. He added six rebounds and four steals.
Transfer center Josh Johnson contributed 14 points and nine rebounds while frosh center Yusuf Hassan reached a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. First-year forward Evan Brooks contributed 11 points, making three 3-pointers.
The Knights used a 15-4 run at the end of the first half to take the lead, 33-25, at halftime. PCC never threatened in the last 20 minutes.
In the opening round game of the Citrus tourney, sophomore forward Derrell Wallace poured in his season-high of 22 points, but the Lancers fell against LA Pierce, 86-76. Wallace was 8-for-12 from the floor, 4-for-4 from the line, and added four rebounds. Hampton tallied 19 points and four assists while Brooks hit four treys as part of his 16 points. Hassan chipped in five points, seven rebounds and four steals.
In the Pierce defeat, the Lancers went on a furious 21-5 run to cut the Brahmas lead to five points, 74-69, but the late rally wasn't enough.
In the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners Roundup tournament Dec. 10, Santa Monica edged the Lancers, 72-70, in the third place final. That followed Irvine Valley's 69-49 win over PCC on Dec. 9. Hampton scored 28 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Point guard Antwain Cleary added 10 points and six assists. Hampton scored 78 points at the three-game tourney and was named to the All-Rio Hondo Tournament team.
PCC will begin the South Coast Conference schedule Wednesday, Jan. 5 in a 7 p.m. tip-off v. Mt. San Antonio at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
