For two years, sophomore runner Tracee van der Wyk has put the Pasadena City College women's cross country and track and field teams in the spotlight. In beginning her sophomore and final sports season as a Lancer, the talented middle distance racer posted yet another memorable performance at the Cerritos Invitational Feb. 19-20.

Van der Wyk, from Temple City High, won the 1,500 meters event in a time of 4:47.46, a full nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher. She then anchored the rare 4x800 relay as she teamed with Tenia Sebastian, Rebecca Nunez, and Elizabeth Lyons in winning that distance race at 10:29.32. The two event victories were the only first place finishes for the Lancers in either the women or men competiton.

Last year, van der Wyk was the South Coast Conference and Southern California champion in the 1,500 meter race.

Sebastian placed fifth in the 400 meters at 1:01.68. Cassandra Lew was 21st out of 30 runners in the 5,000 meters with a mark of 21:18.16. In the 800 meters, van der Wyk, Lyons and Nunez literally ran in a pack as the three finished 21st, 22nd, and 23rd among 43 runners with respective times of 2:39.22, 2:39.31, and 2:40.36.

In men's events at the Cerritos Invitational, Stephen Williams recorded a PCC victory in tying for first place in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet, 8-inches. Williams, already a state championship contender, tied Cuyamaca's Khalil Henry for the best HJ at the meet.

The Lancers' 4x400 relay team grabbed third place behind the sprinting of Justin Thomas, Daylon Wright, Marques Stanley, and Eddie Tripp at 3:22.88. Stanley, Mark Booker, Wright and Thomas were fifth in the 4x100 in 43.82 seconds.

Tripp, Wright, Mike Sower and Vincent Bryant teamed to take fifth in the 4x800 relay at 8:50.1.

Esteven Zarazua placed an impressive seventh in the 800 meters with a mark of 2:01.29.  Zarazua finished 18th in the 1,500 in 4:20.36. He was 11th in the 3,000 steeplechase at 11:30.8. Mark Booker won the fourth and final heat to place 13th overall in the 400 meters at 52.54.

All-Comers Meet Highlights

At the Feb. 11 SCC All-Comers Meet held at Mt. San Antonio College, van der Wyk won three events, including a thus far state best time of 2:17.77 in the 800, and a second-best 3,000 mark (10:22.64). For the PCC men, Thomas took second in the 400 meters (50.70) and Zarazua was fifth (won heat No. 4) overall in the 800 at 2:04.4. The 4x100 and 4x400 relays resulted in third places for the Lancers.

The PCC track and field teams are directed by head coach Larry Wade and assistant coaches Armand Crespo and Pat Williams.
