Sports in the NewsBadminton Keeps Perfect Season Going At 7-0
The Pasadena City College women's badminton team hasn't clinched the South Coast Conference title yet. It's only a matter of time though when the Lancers will clinch their third consecutive conference crown. PCC upped its perfect record to 7-0 with easy victories over El Camino College-Compton Center, 18-3, on March 23, and El Camino (Torrance), 21-0, on March 25. The Lancers also downed Compton, 20-1, on March 18. In Friday's triumph over the Warriors, PCC's ladder of Priscilla Lun, Iris Xu, JK Nguyen-Le, Clara Chang (pictured), Thoa Huynh, and Amy Ly all recorded two singles wins. In doubles, Xu-Nguyen-Le, Lun-Chang, and Ly-Huynh combined to take all five matches. Lun, the team's top player from two seasons ago, played nearly flawless badminton in defeating El Camino's No. 1 Tanille Barnes, 21-1, 21-3, and downing No. 2 Yukino Noro, 21-1, 21-0. "Our Big 3 continue to impress, but our No. 4 player Clara Chang has been playing extremely well," said PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez. An international student-athlete from Japan, Chang defeated ECC's Qian Cai, 21-6, 21-8, and beat Karen Hung, 21-8, 21-7. In doubles, she teamed with Lun for a 21-0, 21-5 rout over Barnes-Noro and 21-3, 21-7 beating of Cai-Hung. On Mar. 18 at Compton, Sanchez let Chang play at No. 1 singles and she responded with two singles and two doubles match wins. She beat Compton's Lena Tsai in a tough encounter, 21-12, 21-19, and rolled past the Tartars' Katya Marquez, 21-8, 21-23. In four seasons under Sanchez' leadership, the Lancers have compiled a 41-7 overall record for an .854 winning percentage. This week, the Lancers travel to face East Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 30 (3 p.m. start) and return to Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium for another match with ECC Compton on April 1 (2 p.m.).
