Sports in the NewsDay 1 Highlights Of 11th Pasadena Swim Invitational
The 11th Pasadena Invitational opened Friday with a meet record in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, a 1:39.54 time set by Orange Coast College. Ironically, the Pirates held the old record of 1:40.49 performed in 2003. The two-day event held at the PCC Aquatic Center finishes Saturday with a full day's schedule of events. The PCC men's and women's swim teams are sixth and seventh place, respectively, after the first day of the meet. Orange Coast and Diablo Valley are currently 1 and 2 in the team standings in both genders. Lancer freshman Mikela Velasquez swam third place overall in the women's 100 individual medley with a 1:05 even time. Velasquez was eighth in the 50 freestyle (25.97), an event that saw the PCC pool record and meet record fall with OCC's Kiersten Colesen winning in 23.96 seconds. In men's events, Pasadena's Cario Liu was third in the 500 freestyle (4:53.18) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:01.95). Baldwin Ngai took seventh in that event (2:04.10). In the 50 freestyle, Sharif Alaoui placed eighth (22.17) and teammate Tabrek Seyssel was ninth (22.21). The 400 medley relay squad finished fifth.
