Men's Track: HJ's Williams, 4x400 Relay SoCal Runner-Ups
Three years ago, Chris Hicks was the last Pasadena City College men's track and field athlete to win a state title when he captured the high jump gold medal. In 2011, Steven Williams is hoping to do the same at this year's CCCAA Championships. The freshman's 6-foot-7 leap Friday gave him a tie for second place at the Southern California Championships held at Mt. San Antonio College.
Williams was one of five athletes to clear the 6-7 height, but Khalil Henry of Cuyamaca won the SoCal title by doing it less attempts.
The Lancers scored 27 team points to finish in a tie for 11th place, the best PCC team finish at SoCals since 2007's squad grabbed third place.
In the 4x400 relay, PCC battled, but were beat at the wire by Mt. San Antonio. The second place finish was earned by Eddie Tripp, Korey Brown, Ron Spears and Stephen Peevy in a time of 3:13.87, .80 of a second behind the Mounties.
In the 4x100 relay, the Lancers team of Marques Stanley, Spears, Peevy, and Brown took third place in a time of 41.04. Riverside won that event in 40.66 with Cerritos taking second at 40.67.
Spears, a running back on the 2010 Lancers football team, snagged sixth place in the 100 meters at 10.74. In the 400 meters, Brown took what was for him, and the team, a disappointing seventh place (47.98) while Peevy finished eighth (48.40). Brown entered the race with the state's best time at 47.37 (performed at the South Coast Conference Championships). Kivon Grant of El Camino College-Compton Center established the new state leading time in winning the 400 in 46.62.
In another tough break for the Lancers, Tripp tripped and fell in the 400 hurdles and did not finish. He had come in with the fourth best mark in the state. The Lancers likely would have finished as high as seventh place with a faster mark by Brown and a clean trip by Tripp.
Willliams and the relay teams will take part at the CCCAA State Championships Saturday, May 21 at Sacramento's American River College. The PCC men's and women's track and field teams are directed by first-year head coach Larry Wade, a former NCAA All-American hurdler at Texas A&M University.
