Last year, Cypress College prevented the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team from making it to the CCCAA State final four tournament with a 4-game win over the Lancers in round 3 of the SoCal playoffs. PCC was able to exact a little revenge Sept. 9 at the El Camino College Classic in Torrance.

The Lancers knocked off Cypress in four games, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, then routed Santa Barbara City, 25-22, 25-10, 25-10, in improving to 5-0 on the season.

PCC holds an impressive record of 50-7 since the start of the 2009 season as Coach Tammy Silva's program has become a legitimate state power.

In the Cypress win, Ella Moe pounded 17 kills while 6-foot-1, freshman newcomer Megan Callen, who joined the team only two weeks ago after returning from the University of North Florida, added eight kills and seven blocks. Yanise Joseph tallied 11 kills. Setter Jessica Xu dished out 34 assists with four kills and eight digs. Libero Jessica Vargas had 14 digs and defensive specialist Mallorie Hopkins made 10 digs.

Against SBCC, Moe led the way again with 11 kills (.435 hitting percentage) and 16 digs. Vargas dug a season-high 18 digs and served three aces. Jennifer Estrada also had three aces and 10 digs. Callen was a force at middle blocker, scoring six kills and five blocks.

"Megan has given us a new dimension in the front row," Silva said. "She was a great player at St. Lucy's High and helped them to a CIF title. With her and Jackie Valle-Acosta, we have a tremendous presence at the net. Moe has been a go-to hitter for us. We beat two teams that were ranked in the state Top 10 last year, so I feel we are improving at a steady pace."

PCC will not play again until Wednesday, Sept. 21 when it faces perennial state contender Orange Coast College in the Lancers' home opener at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. Game time is 5 p.m.
