Women Soccer's Gutierrez Extends Goal-Scoring Streak To 5 Games
Mallory Gutierrez kept her goal-scoring streak alive at five games as the Pasadena City College women's soccer team blanked host Mt. San Jacinto College, 3-0, in a non-conference game Friday afternoon.
In the 15th minute, Gutierrez took a pass from Alexandria Jimenez, dribbled then fired a shot past MSJC goalie Erica Marques for her team-leading fifth goal.
The Lancers, 2-0-1 in their last three matches, evened their record at 2-2-1 under second-year head coach Randy Lilavois.
At the 25th minute mark, Joleen Galeazzi-Pimentel took a corner kick that was redirected off a Mt. San Jacinto defender for a goal that made it 2-0. With three minutes left, Graciela Guevara sent a lead pass to Vanessa Capra, who dribbled past a few defenders and fired in her second goal of the season to cap the victory.
Reserve goalie Tatiana Cruz made four saves and picked up her first collegiate shutout.
"This was a big game for our bench," Lilavois said. "We were missing some regulars who were out sick and our reserves stepped up to play well. We're very happy with the result and I think our team is starting to click together."
Lilavois praised the play of Tanya Pila, Leila Farazdaghi, Alexandria Nomura and Cruz, all players who had increased playing time against MSJC.
PCC played without regulars Brittany Austin, Jessica Capra, Alexandra Dreves and Tori Floyd.
The Lancers will try for their third straight win Tuesday, Sept. 20 in a 4 p.m. non-conference match at Oxnard College.
