Blank's 7 Goals Powers Water Polo To First Win
Makenzie Blank scored seven goals on just nine attempts and added two assists as the Pasadena City College women's water polo team secured its first victory of 2011 in a 15-2 triumph over West Valley at the Cabrillo Tournament Friday.
After four matches, Blank, a freshman utility player from Temple City High, leads the Lancers in goals with 12. PCC is 1-3 overall after losing to Diablo Valley, 17-4, later on Friday. Today, PCC closes the Northern Califonia tourney with games against host Cabrillo (9 a.m.) and Ohlone (3 p.m.).
In the West Valley rout, frosh attacker Milene Minassians (Glendale High) was a perfect 4-for-4 on goal-scoring opportunities. Overall, the Lancers spread the offense as eight different players recorded at least one assist. Paloma Barrera (Burroughs in Burbank) contributed two goals and a helper while both Naoni Padilla and Catherine Velasco each tallied a goal and an assist.
In the DVC loss, rookie goalie Shelby Gregg (Crescenta Valley High) totaled 15 saves and made six steals in playing the final three periods in the cage. It was the fifth highest single-game save total in PCC history. The Lancers' goal scorers were Blank (two, pictured), Minassians, and Barrera.
On Sept. 21, PCC suffered its second straight South Coast Conference defeat, falling at Cerritos College, 16-6. The Falcons jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead before the Lancers responded with a strong offensive second half. Giselle Mendieta (Eagle Rock, freshman wing) led Pasadena with two goals while Padilla, Blank, Velasco and Minassians scored one each. Gregg had five saves and totaled a team season-high seven steals in one half of play in goal. Gregg has split time with Padilla (South Pasadena High) as the PCC netminders.
