Sports in the NewsPower Play Clicks For Water Polo In 11-8 Win Over El Camino
The Pasadena City College women's water polo team scored three times on the power play Wednesday and it was ultimately the difference in the Lancers' 11-8, South Coast Conference win over El Camino College at the Aquatic Center. PCC improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in SCC matches. Taking advantage of aggressive El Camino defense that resulted in numerous exclusions, the Lancers fought back from early 2-0, then 5-4 deficits. Giselle Mendietta, Makenzie Blank and then Lauren D'Angelo would all score on the player-advantage opportunities. D'Angelo's first goal of the season tied it at 5-5 with 5:48 left in the third quarter and sparked a 4-0 scoring run by PCC over a 3:30 span. Blank's long-range shot gave PCC the lead for good at 6-5 (4:12 mark) and Milene Minassians capped the run with 2:18 to go in the third period, making it 8-5. With two quick goals to start the fourth quarter, El Camino would claw back to cut it to 9-8. This time, right at the end of a power play, Minassians scored her third goal to give the Lancers a 2-goal edge with 4:38 remaining. Blank again hit from long range on a pass from Minassians (2:57) to cap the scoring. PCC's defense came up big thanks to Shelby Gregg, who made four steals and a shot block as a field player during the first half, and then totaled seven saves as the Lancers' goalie in the second half. Gregg stopped Erica Bender on back-to-back shot attempts that maintained PCC's 6-5 lead. Naoni Padilla had three saves during the first half as the Lancers' netminder. Offensively, Blank scored four goals and added two assists as she upped her team season-leading goal total to 24. Mendieta tallied two goals and two assists while Paloma Barrera also scored a goal. El Camino (5-4, 1-2 in SCC play) was led by Ariel Castillo with four goals. Pasadena hosts Mt. San Antonio next Wednesday, Oct. 5 in a 3 p.m. conference match at the Aquatic Center.
