State No. 6 Volleyball Enters SCC Play At 8-1
The state's No. 6-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team took third place at the Los Angeles Pierce College 2nd Brahma Invitational tournament Sept. 23-24. While the Lancers had a 7-match win streak snapped in a disappointing 5-game loss to No. 13 Golden West, they are busy preparing for this week's beginning to the South Coast Conference schedule.
Pasadena (8-1 record) opened the Pierce tourney with a sweep over Santa Monica, 25-17, 28-26, 25-20. Ella Moe pounded 12 kills and Megan Callen had 10 in the match.
The Lancers were poised to possibly face defending state champion and current No. 1-ranked Pierce in the tourney final, but instead were handed their first defeat of 2011 by Golden West. PCC rallied from 2-0 games down to force the fifth set, but this time the Lancers couldn't complete the comeback in losing, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-27, 15-8. PCC made a season-high 31 attack errors, hitting just .099 in the match. Libero Jessica Vargas totaled 29 digs but the most kills by any player was under double digits, nine each from middle blocker Callen and reserve hitter Viridiana Gallardo.
The Lancers are 3-1 in matches that have gone the full 5-game route.
PCC bounced back to sweep No. 25 Santa Barbara City College, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21, in th third place match. It was the team's second win over SBCC this year as Callen led the way with 10 kills (just 17 attempts).
"You never want to lose, but the way we lost to Golden West better be a message to our outside hitters," said PCC Head Coach Tammy Silva. "They have to be on top of their game in every match, not take a fiesta like we did. We put ourselves in a hole, recovered but went right back into the tank in the fifth game. All we can do is learn from that. Better now it happens than when we face El Camino and Mt. SAC in conference."
The Lancers open the SCC schedule Friday, Sept. 30 in a 6 p.m. match at unranked Long Beach City College.
