Rosales Sparks Men's Soccer In 2-2 Tie With LBCC

With top scorer and playmaker Gor Kirakosyan out with an injury the past few matches, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team has looked for someone else to step up offensively. On Friday, freshman forward Irving Rosales, an early season sensation who had cooled off recently, found his scoring touch again with two goals as the Lancers settled for a 2-2, South Coast Conference tie against visiting Long Beach City College.

In the 26th minute, Rosales rallied PCC from a 1-0 deficit by knocking in a hard roller from 20 yards out after Michael Alcaraz intercepted a goalie clear out at the 30 yard-line. In the 65th minute, Rosales struck again as headed in a lift kick from the corner by David Gonzalez for a 2-1 Lancers' lead.

PCC unfortunately couldn't stop a four-match winless streak (now five at 0-3-2) as Long Beach responded with a goal by Andre Martinez with 11 minutes left.

Pasadena is 6-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 now in the SCC. Long Beach is 4-3-5 and 1-2-3 in conference games.

PCC goalie Ramiro Martinez made eight saves, including a pair of acrobatic stops in the 30th and 33rd minutes. On LBCC's first goal, he made the initial save before Jesse Aguirre knocked in a rebound during the 16th minute. Martinez also came up big with five minutes left as he managed to come out and alter the path of Andre Martinez, who put a shot wide on a breakaway attempt. The frosh netminder made two more saves in the final two minutes.

Rosales, from Pasadena Muir High (pictured), upped his season goal total to eight, two less than sophomore Kirakosyan's team-leading 10. He had five of PCC's 11 shots on goal.

The Lancers came into the match having suffered road losses to East Los Angeles, 3-1 on Oct. 7, and El Camino, 1-0, on Oct. 11. Against ELAC, Yuta Tsujioka, a sophomore midfielder from Japan, scored PCC's lone goal.

PCC will have a tough task Tuesday, Oct. 18 when the Lancers host defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College. The Mounties only loss last season was handed to them by PCC at Robinson Stadium, a 3-2 win after the Lancers battled back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Game time is 1 p.m.
