Coming into a key South Coast Conference matchup Friday night at state No. 8-ranked Mt. San Antonio, the No. 7-rated Pasadena City College women's volleyball team looked to solidify its hold on second place in the conference. Sitting at match point in the first set, 24-22, the roof collapsed on the Lancers.

PCC proceeded to make three consecutive unforced attack errors, lost the set, 26-24, and then fell behind by large margins in the second and third sets in being swept by the Mounties, 26-24, 25-21, 25-12. The Lancers trailed by as much as 24-16 in the second set, but had its last strong run to make it respectable. There was no such luck in set 3 when Mt. SAC built an 8-1 lead and went on to finish the sweep.

The Lancers and Mt. SAC are now tied with identical overall and conference records at 15-3 and 7-2. The loss severely damaged Pasadena's hopes for a conference title as El Camino is still undefeated at 9-0. ECC has one more match with both Pasadena and Mt. SAC, which still gives both the Lancers and Mounties an opportunity to tie for the SCC crown.

Pasadena's hitting problems in set 1 went on to haunt it the rest of the match. Overall, PCC hit just .067 with 31 kills and 24 errors in 104 attempts. Mt. SAC hit .235, but outplayed the Lancers defensively, especially in the front row. PCC often hit right into blocks as Mt. SAC stuffed Pasadena hitters often behind the play of Caitlyn Fortugno and Erica Chavez.

Mt. SAC's Saleen Sanchez was the only hitter on either team to record double digits in kills with 11. Fortugno had nine kills and four blocks. PCC had four players with seven kills, the most effective being Jackie Valle-Acosta, who made one error in 14 attempts and added two blocks. Setter Jessica Xu totaled 25 assists and seven digs while libero Jessica Vargas made a match-high 16 digs.

The Lancers next host fourth-place Cerritos College on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in a 6 p.m. SCC match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
