Sophomores Celebrate Women's VB Conference Finale
The Pasadena City College women's volleyball freshmen sang the national anthem as a tribute to the sophomores Wednesday night, then the second-year Lancers celebrated Sophomore Night with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 sweep over Los Angeles Trade Tech in the teams' South Coast Conference final match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
PCC improved to 19-4 overall and finished tied for second place in the SCC with an 11-3 league mark, same as Mt. San Antonio. LA Trade Tech went winless in conference play at 0-14 and finished 2-16 overall.
Sophomore outside hitter Ella Moe pounded 16 kills in 26 attempts without making an error as she solidified her conference-leading kills average at 3.58 per set. She added nine digs.
Sophomore libero Jessica Vargas, the new career leader in digs at PCC with 650, added 14 digs while letterman setter Jessica Xu totaled two kills, five aces, and passed out 20 assists. Sophomore middle blocker Stacey Diaz contributed five kills and a solo block, and two-year defensive specialist Mallorie Hopkins had nine digs. All five sophomores recorded service aces as part of 13 twirled by the team.
Frosh setter Kailey Faust added 17 assists and two aces.
The Lancers, the state's No. 8-ranked team, awaits their seeding in the Southern California Regional Playoffs which will take place in a coaches' meeting Sunday, Nov. 20 at PCC. PCC likely will be among the top eight seeds and should host a first round playoff match on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
