On Friday night, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team returned to the form that has made it one of the premier programs in California. The Lancers scored a season high in points and posted their least points allowed thus far this season in an 85-53 rout over Lassen during the first round of the DoubleTree by Hilton Rose City Classic at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers (3-5) received support from both their starters--sophomore guard Vera Machado with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four steals--and reserves--freshman guard Stella Ghazarian netted a game-high 21 points. PCC jumped out to a 43-26 lead by halftime thanks to a 17-2 run late in the period.

Ghazarian helped PCC shoot .792 (19-for-24) from the free throw line as she was a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe. Ghazarian also sank three 3s while Machado poured in four bombs from long range. Sophomore forward Destinee Sellers contributed 12 points and Marquetta Stokes tallied eight points. Eleven of the team's 12 players scored points, including seven off the bench by letterman guard Kim Wong and a 5-point, 7-rebound performance by reserve frosh forward Araceli Perez.

Another effective player for Pasadena was 5-foot, point guard Tiffany Thompson, who was strong on both sides of the floor with four points, five assists, and four steals. Second-year guard Erica Steward totaled four points and seven rebounds while rookie forward Sabrina Martinez had four points and four rebounds.

Lassen (1-8) was led by center Brianna Cheatum, who scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

In the championship semifinals, PCC faces West Los Angeles College Saturday, Dec. 10 in an 8 p.m. tip-off.

In others scores from the Rose City Classic: LA Pierce beat Napa Valley, 68-43, College of the Canyons pounded Butte, 110-59, and West LA downed MiraCosta, 59-36.
