Reserves Help Women's Hoops Advance To Rose City Classic Final image

While the Pasadena City College women's basketball team has gone with a set starting five that features five sophomores, the Lancers and head coach Joe Peron have recently seen the team's reserve unit take a more prominent role. The bench corps outscored the starters, 39-24, and in the process helped PCC advance to the championship final of the DoubleTree by Hilton Rose City Classic with a 63-42 victory over West Los Angeles Saturday night. All tournament games for the 14th edition of the R-C-C are played on campus at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers (4-5) face a high-scoring College of the Canyons in Sunday's championship final beginning at 4 p.m. Canyons, which scored 110 points in the first round, downed LA Pierce, 86-76, in its semifinal game Saturday. The Cougars (6-3) are on a 4-game win streak.

Against WLAC, PCC's defense again recorded its season best in least points allowed, including keeping the Wildcats to just 13 points in the first half. For the second straight game, freshman reserve guard Stella Ghazarian led the Lancers on the scoreboard with 16 points, including three 3-point baskets. Another backup freshman and guard-forward Ashlee Cornelious had her best effort thus far in 2011-2012 as she tallied 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Other reserves aiding the Lancers were sophomore guard Kim Wong with six points and frosh guard Kahlia Theus with three points and five rebounds.

While the starters didn't score much, they did provide solid defense and a rebounding presence. Forward Destinee Sellers contributed 10 points and five rebounds, guard Vera Machado had six points, nine boards, and a team-high four steals, center Tonisha Lacey pulled down 10 rebounds, and point guard Tiffany Thompson delivered two points, six assists, and three steals.

Wong's 3-point play (layup and free throw) gave PCC a commanding 22-3 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. West LA (5-6) didn't threaten, but received a game-high 24 points from Shaneva Hayward.

In other Rose City games, Lassen downed MiraCosta, 67-63, and Butte defeated Napa Valley, 64-50. The rest of today's schedule includes the consolation final (12 noon) between Butte and Lassen followed by the third place game between LA Pierce and West LA at 2 p.m. PCC v. Canyons caps the tourney title matchup at 4 p.m.
