First Half Bonanza Leads Women's Basketball To 78-49 Win
For one half, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team reminded itself and others that it is more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard. The Lancers opened an 11-0 lead and wouldn't let up as they outscored visiting Los Angeles Southwest, 50-18, in the first half on their way to an easy 78-49, South Coast Conference victory Wednesday evening.
Back-to-back 3-point baskets by freshman guard Stella Ghazarian capped an impressive first 20 minutes for the Lancers, who evened their overall record to 10-10 and SCC record to 4-4. PCC was 7-for-9 from 3-point land to open the contest and had three players score in double digits by halftime.
Overall, Ghazarian sank seven 3-point bombs (14 attempts) as part of her game-high 23 points. Sophomore forward Destinee Sellers added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Marquetta Stokes scored all 10 of her points in the first half and rested most of the second half.
All 12 Lancers scored for the first time this season. Frosh guard Sabrina Martinez made a rare start and hit two 3-pointers as she scored six points. Freshman forward Ashlee Cornelious led all PCC rebounders with seven boards (and two points). Frosh forward Araceli Perez added four points, six rebounds and two steals. Second-year guard Erica Steward contributed five points and six rebounds.
For LA Southwest, 2-14 overall and winless in SCC play at 0-7, center Tierra Robinson had an outstanding effort as she scored 22 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked six shots. Robinson made her last eight straight shots from the floor.
Pasadena travels to face Long Beach City College in another key conference matchup on Friday, Jan. 20 in a 5 p.m. tip-off. The Vikings knocked off PCC in the teams' first encounter and conference opener back in December.
