All-State Stokes Leads 4 Women's Cagers Named All-SCC
Sophomore forward Marquetta Stokes, recently selected to the All-State Third Team, led a four-player Pasadena City College women's basketball contingent selected to the 2011-2012 All-South Coast Conference First and Second Teams.
The Lancers (16-12, No. 15 seed in the SoCal Playoffs) host Antelope Valley Wednesday night in a 7 p.m. regional playoff game.
Stokes averaged 13.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.4 assists during the 16-game SCC season. She is a two-time, All-SCC selection, making the Second Team last season. Stokes, from Oakland Tech, and sophomore center Tonisha Lacey were named 2011-2012 All-SCC First Team. Lacey (Tennyson High, Hayward) averaged 8.6 points and 10.4 rebounds in conference play.
Making the All-SCC Second Team were sophomore forward Destinee Sellers and freshman guard Stella Ghazarian. Sellers, from Chatsworth High, had conference averages of 8.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals. Ghazarian led the SCC in 3-point field goals (40) and was second on the Lancers in conference scoring at 10.8 points per contest.
The trio of Stokes, Lacey, and Sellers have been integral figures for the Lancers in each of the last two seasons. Their defensive ability and clutch scoring and rebounding were instrumental in both of PCC's big late-season wins over Cerritos and East Los Angeles. Ghazarian has been the first player off the Lancers' bench and has followed in the footsteps of former PCC 3-point bombers and all-conference talents Melia Basavand and Anna Shahinian as players who all came out of Glendale High.
