PCC Track And Field Season Features Variety image

While in many seasons of Pasadena City College track and field, the Lancers teams have featured primarily sprinters and some middle distance runners, the 2012 squads have more of a balanced roster of athletes. PCC has shown some promise in the field events after two events.

At the Compton Invitational Feb. 24, sophomore Daniel Walker (pictured) won the men's javelin event with a first-place throw of 48.03 meters. Walker is from Pasadena High.

Caleb Wood, a freshman, took second place in the discus at 41.66 meters. First-year runner Alfredo Folgar took third place in the 800 meters (2:00.99) and 1,500 meters (4:10.35). Kevin Cano was fourth in the 1,500 right behind Folgar at 4:10.42. Devin Rojas, a freshman from Burbank Burroughs High, grabbed third place in the 200 sprint at 23.11 seconds.

In the 3,000 run, PCC had consecutive order finishes from third to fifth by Chris Le (4:27.06), Cano (4:35.46) and Brian Sacripanti (4:37.42).

At the Cerritos Invitational on Feb. 17-18, sophomore Robert Pachorek raced to third in the 200 at 22.37 seconds. The 4x800 relay team of Folgar, Rojas, Sacripanti and Oswell Caal finished second with an 8:18.99 mark.

Cano, fourth, and Le, fifth, participated in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Wood placed third in the javelin (47.95m) and Walker fourth (46.90). Wood also came in fourth in the discus throw at 42.08m. Cano was sixth in the grueling 5,000 meter run at 16:12.14.

At the Compton Invitational, sophomore Elizabeth Lyons, PCC's All-South Coast Conference cross country runner, won the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:20.43 as three Lancers occupied the top three places in the event. Lyons was followed by Arielle Steimer-Barragan (second, 11:29.81) and Diane Lombardi (third, 11:44.90).

Lombardi, a freshman from Crescenta Valley High, placed third in the 1,500 at 4:58.44 and fourth in the 800 at 2:26.11. Lyons, from Rosemead High, was fourth in the 1,500 (5:05.52).

Lamisha Duree bolted to second in the 400 with a 1:00.06 mark. In field events, Yvette Bastidas (El Rancho High) was fifth in the discus (31.98 meters), and finished sixth in both the shot put and javelin.

At the Cerritos Invitational, PCC placed second in the 4x800 relay behind a 9:59.61 time from racers Tenia Sebastian, Lombardi, Steimer-Barragan, and Lyons. Steimer-Barragan completed the 5,000 meters in sixth at 19:09.52 and Bastidas also was sixth in the shot put.

The PCC track and field teams are directed by head coach Larry Wade and assistant coach Armand Crespo.
