PCC Track's Lyons 2nd in 5,000 Race At Fullerton Brown Invitational
An All-South Coast Conference cross country runner, Pasadena City College women's track and field sophomore Elizabeth Lyons is displaying that distance strength of late for the Lancers. Lyons took second place in the 5,000 meters "C" race at the Ben Brown Invitational Meet held at Cal State Fullerton Mar. 9-10.
Lyons ran a time of 18 minutes, 57.01 seconds, which is now 17th in the state at that distance.
In the men's competition, Caleb Wood established himself as one of the state's top throwers in the discus and javelin. Wood placed sixth overall, tops among community college throwers, in finishing sixth in the discus toss at 156 feet, 9 inches. That throw places him seventh in the state in the event. He placed seventh overall in the javelin at 166-02, good enough for 13th in California in that event.
Matt Aikens finished sixth overall in the triple jump at 44-03.25. The 4x100 relay squad placed fifth at 42.35 seconds behind the racing of Ron Spears, Keiton Winston, Devin Rojas, and Robert Pachorek.
Rojas sprinted to 11th place (21st in state rankings) with 49.72 time in the 400 meters.
Luis Dorantes went up against 4-year university and club runners in the 5,000 meters A race and ran a swift 14:55.89. While the time was only 26th in the field, it was third best among the community college racers and puts him ninth in the state rankings. Kevin Cano took fourth place in the 5,000 D Race with a mark of 15:32.62.
This Friday, Mar. 16, the Lancers track and field teams participate in both the California Relays (at Cerritos College) and the Occidental College Distance Carnival, an evening meet.
