Sports in the NewsMen's Track Dorantes Records Fastest 10,000 At Oxy Distance Carnival
Pasadena City College sophomore Luis Dorantes established himself as the state's premier distance runner with the current California Community College fastest time of 31 minutes, 4.62 seconds in the 10,000 meters event at Friday night's Occidental College Distance Carnival. Dorantes (pictured) placed second in the mixed race that included 4-year university racers. In the same race, Brian Sacripanti placed 24th at 33:24.71 while sophomore Elizabeth Lyons' 40:28.95 finish (55th overall) was actually the sixth fastest time in the state for women. Sophomore Cassandra Lew's 41:14.67 is ninth fastest. Another top women's performance was turned in by freshman Diane Lombardi, who was 18th in the 800 meters, but third among CCC runners and her 2:20.76 time is now eighth in the state listings. Kevin Cano ran a season-best time (eighth in the state) to take 16th in the men's 3,000 steeplechase at 9:53.94. CALIFORNIA RELAYS While the PCC men's and women's track and field distance runners were at the Oxy Distance Carnival, the rest of the two teams participated in Friday afternoon's California Relays at Cerritos College. The men's 4x100 relay squad of Ron Spears, Keiton Winston, Ron Pachorek, and Devin Rojas raced a season-best 41.92 time (fifth in the race) that is now eighth in the state fastest times. Caleb Wood hurled a 170-foot throw to place third in the javelin, and keep him ninth in the state. Malik Gillens took third in the long jump (21-6) and Matt Aikens was sixth in the triple jump (44-2). For the women, Jakae Bridges excelled by finishing second overall in the 400 meters. Her 59.20 seconds time is 14th in the state. Thrower Yvette Bastidas placed fifth in the shot put at 31-6.
