After three straight South Coast Conference titles, the Pasadena City College badminton team has become a marked squad for opponents. Host East Los Angeles nearly put an end to a long South Coast Conference winning streak by the Lancers on Mar. 23, but PCC kept the streak alive now at 27 consecutive conference matches, edging the Huskies, 11-10.

Tied 8-8 in points, PCC No. 5 player Alyssa Bolt gave the Lancers a team lead with a 21-16, 21-18 win over ELAC's No. 5 Teresa Chiang. Pasadena then clinched the match as the No. 1 doubles team of Angie Ortiz and Grace Espinoza scored a 22-20, 21-13 win over the Huskies' top doubles pair of Leanna Xu and Xiao Dan Lei.

"The players were talking in the van about not wanting to be the team that broke the SCC streak," said PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez. "Win or lose, these kids are just fighters and suit up to play hard every day. We had some players out of their normal spots due to classroom commitments for two starters, but we put in a total team effort."

Ortiz, the Lancers' No. 1 in singles, tallied victories over ELAC No. 1 Xu, 21-10, 21-18, and No. 2 Diana Su, 21-9, 21-9. Espinoza beat Xu, 21-10, 22-20, and went three sets to down Su, 18-21, 21-13, 21-15. Ortiz-Esponza also won two doubles matches overall. Kiwi Liang, the sister of former PCC player Jewy Liang, scored a big point with a win in No. 4 singles over Shirley Su, 21-14, 21-7. In No. 3 doubles, Liang and Linda Li topped Chiang and Si Quiang Pei, 21-16, 23-21.

The Lancers remain perfect in the SCC in leading the conference at 4-0. East LA is 2-2.

On Mar. 21 at El Camino College (Torrance), PCC downed the Warriors, 17-4. Ortiz, Cynthia Gutierrez, Bolt, and Beatriz Bermudez all won a pair of singles matches. In doubles, Espinoza and Ortiz won two matches and Gutierrez and Bermudez rallied to win in No. 3 doubles, 14-21, 21-12, 21-12.

This week, the Lancers host El Camino College-Compton Center on Wednesday, Mar. 28 (3 p.m.) and El Camino (Torrance) on Friday, Mar. 30 (2 p.m.). Both matches will be played at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
