On Mar. 23, East Los Angeles College established it might have the ability to stop the juggernaut known as the Pasadena City College badminton team. The Huskies stretched the Lancers to the limit in that match, 11-10. But in the rematch Wednesday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium, PCC pounded East LA in a dominating 19-2 victory. It was the Lancers' 30th consecutive South Coast Conference triumph.

The Lancers all but clinched what will be their fourth straight SCC title as they kept their perfect record at 8-0 overall and 7-0 in conference matches. East LA (4-3) is three games behind the Lancers in second place with five contests left on the regular season schedule.

"Before the match, there was a little bit of apprehension for some of our players," said PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez. "They knew that East LA almost got us last match. Then once the singles matches got going, the players just took over. From top to bottom, we played tremendous badminton. We have an all freshmen squad, but they play like seasoned veterans."

No. 1 PCC player Angie Ortiz, who was an honorable mention for CCCSIA March State Athlete of the Month, kept her perfect record alive at 32-0 in individual singles/doubles matches. Ortiz (Pasadena High) and No. 2 Cynthia Gutierrez (Azusa High) swept all four singles and their two doubles matches against the Huskies.

The lower ladder for the Lancers were on top of their game as No. 4 Kiwi Liang, No. 5 Gabriella Anjani (Temple City High), and No. 6 Alyssa Bolt each won a pair of singles matches. Liang (Alhambra High) rallied from one set down to beat ELAC No. 3 Danielle Lei, 14-21, 21-11, 21-9. Bolt picked up a close win over No. 5 Teresa Chiang, 24-22, 21-18.

The Lancers will be in action in road matches next week at El Camino (Wednesday, April 18) and at East Los Angeles (Friday, April 20). A match scheduled for today v. ECC Compton Center has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.
