Women's Swim 4th At SCC; Velasquez, Jensen Qualify For State Meet
For the second straight season, the Pasadena City College women's swim team finished in fourth place at the South Coast Conference Championships held April 19-21 at the PCC Aquatic Center.
The Lancers scored 351 team points to finish ahead of El Camino (fifth, 348). Chaffey won the team championship with 636 points while Cerritos (455) and Mt. San Antonio (454) took second and third, respectively.
PCC's 400-yard freestyle relay took third place in the final women's event with a time of 3:51.70 as the squad of Giselle Mendieta, Paige Watroba, Courtney Jensen, and Mikela Velasquez swam together for the last time as Lancers.
Mendieta, a freshman, scored a second place medal in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.81) and Jensen was also second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.27). Jensen, a sophomore, swam to third place in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:00.53 while letterman Velasquez grabbed third in the 100 freestyle (54.66).
Velasquez, a two-time SCC champion in the 100 individual medley, was the only Lancer to win an event at the SCC finals meet.
Velasquez qualified for three events at this week's CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships held at East Los Angeles College April 26-28. Velasquez will compete in the 50 freestyle (seed time 25.24), 100 freestyle (54.66), and 100 IM (1:02.85). Jensen will join Velasquez for the second year in a row at the state meet by qualifying for the 500 freestyle (5:22.83) and 1,650 freestyle.
