Ortiz Earns SCC Singles, Doubles Individual Championships
Pasadena City College women's badminton freshman Angie Ortiz went the 3-set distance in winning both the singles and doubles titles at the South Coast Conference Individual Tournament held May 4 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.
Ortiz, who had a 44-match win streak in both singles and doubles snapped May 2 during the Southern California team championship final, defeated Lancers' teammate Cynthia Gutierrez, 21-19, 17-21, 21-18, in the singles finals.
Ortiz also teammed with Gutierrez as the PCC pair won the doubles title, coming back from a set down to beat El Camino's Corinne Belandres-Kumiko Noguchi, 19-21, 21-11, 21-18.
It was the fourth year in a row that PCC players have captured the conference singles and doubles crowns. Ortiz is the third Lancer in the last four years to win both titles (Iris Xu, 2010; Priscilla Lun, 2009). The Lancers own each of the last five doubles conference crowns.
Besides the titles, PCC qualified four singles and three doubles for the CCCAA State Individual Championships this Friday-Saturday, May 11-12 at San Diego City College.
Kiwi Liang and Grace Espinoza joined Ortiz and Gutierrez as singles qualifiers. Liang-Espinoza and the team of Alyssa Bolt and Gaby Anjani join Ortiz-Gutierrez in the doubles seeds.
PCC Head Coach Bill Sanchez and his Lancers finished the team season at 13-1 as the program won its fourth straight SCC team crown.
