Women's Water Polo Finishes 2-2 At Saddleback Tournament
The Pasadena City College women's water polo team defeated host Saddleback, 14-8, and succombed in a hard-fought 11-7 loss to Palomar Sept. 8 in closing out the season-opening Saddleback Tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Lancers used a pair of 5-goal, 2-assist performances by returning All-South Coast Conference First Teamer Makenzie Blank and transfer Ashli Gonzales to down Saddleback. Milene Minassians added two goals while Paloma Barrera and Giselle Mendieta (team-high five saves) had a goal a piece. Naoni Padilla made eight saves over the final two quarters after starting goalie Shelby Gregg made six in the first half.
Against Palomar, Blank scored the hat trick with two steals while Minassians had two goals and two steals. Gonzales and Taylor Guidera scored single goals. Padilla recorded two assists. Gregg had a sensational game with 17 saves, including three times making stops on rebound attempts. It matched her PCC high of last year when she stopped 17 in a Nov. 5 match v. El Camino.
PCC hosts Long Beach City College in its South Coast Conference opener Wednesday, Sept. 12. Game time is 3 p.m. at the Aquatic Center.
Blank is approaching the PCC career goals record mark. With her 14 goals at the Saddleback Tournament, she now has 93 career goals. Blank is fourth on the all-time scoring list, three behind Andrea Ahle (2005-2006) and Sarah Min (2006) and 12 behind school record holder Lybov Tchougounova, who also set a single-season scoring record with 105 goals in 2007.
