State No. 3 Ranked Volleyball Ready To Be Tested This Week
After rising to No. 3 in the CCCWVCA State Top 25 Poll and No. 2 in the Southern California region, the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team will be in for what should be three big tests this week.
The undefeated Lancers (5-0) first will travel to face No. 7 Orange Coast College in a non-conference match Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m.
PCC next participates in the 3rd Los Angeles Pierce College Brahma Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22. The Lancers will play unranked Santa Monica College in the opener on Friday at 6:30 p.m. If PCC wins there, it will face the winner of the No. 10 Bakersfield v. unranked Palomar match at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Bakersfield recently placed second at the 16-team San Diego Mesa Tournament.
If the Lancers win there, it will set up what should be a titan type final. Pasadena will likely face either No. 8 Golden West or two-time defending state champion Pierce, the winner of the SD Mesa Tournament and currently the No. 1 ranked team in California. That championship match will be played at 7 p.m.
"It's put up or shut up time for us," said PCC head coach Tammy Silva. "It will be 12 days since we last played when we face Orange Coast. We then expect to be playing two more top 10 teams this weekend. We've proven so far that we belong up in the top tier. The players want to show people we should continue to belong there."
On Friday, Sept. 28, the Lancers will open South Coast Conference play with a 6 p.m. match v. Los Angeles Trade Tech College at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
