No. 7 Orange Coast Delivers No. 3 PCC Volleyball First Loss
Host Orange Coast College took advantage of numerous mistakes by the state No. 3-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team as the 7th-rated Pirates swept the Lancers, 25-13, 25-23, 25-19. PCC fell to 5-1 while OCC stayed undefeated at 4-0.
After a 12-day layoff in the schedule, the Lancers were shaky from the outset in making 10 attack errors in the first set. Orange Coast opened with an 8-0 run, and later added a 10-2 spurt in running away with that game.
In game 2, PCC middle blocker Jackie Valle-Acosta recorded a pair of blocks as the Lancers led 18-16. Orange Coast responded with the next six points. PCC cut the deficit to one before Pirates' hitter Dana Nicholson spiked a kill to clinch the second set.
The Lancers led game 3 at 4-0 and 9-5, but another mini OCC run of 8-2 gave the Pirates a 13-11 advantage. PCC tied it at 17-17 on a block by Viridiana Gallardo (pictured), but that was the team's last hurrah. OCC top hitter Karlee Riggs nailed her match-high 23rd kill for match point and a surprising sweep by the Pirates.
For PCC, middle blocker Megan Callen recorded six kills to lead the team.
"No excuses," said PCC head coach Tammy Silva. "Orange Coast came out and played very well and with great energy. We made so many unforced errors in the first set and that set the tone for the match. We have to just let this one go because we're going to face some more great teams on Saturday."
Silva's Lancers next play at the LA Pierce College Brahma Classic on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22. PCC opens with a match v. unranked Santa Monica on Friday (6:30 p.m.), and if the Lancers win, they would likely face state No. 10 Bakersfield in the semifinals. The Lancers will then either face No. 8 Golden West or two-time defending state champion and current No. 1 Pierce in a finals match (either championship or third place final).
