Blank Becomes 2nd PCC 100-Goal Scorer In WWP 11-9 Defeat At Chaffey
Sophomore team captain Makenzie Blank scored five goals, lifting her past the 100-goal mark in her Pasadena City College women's water polo career, during the Lancers' 11-9, South Coast Conference defeat at Chaffey College Wednesday afternoon.
Blank is just the second Lancer to reach the century mark in goals, joining Lybov Tchougounova, who scored 105 goals in her only season at PCC in 2007. Blank, who scored 79 goals last year as a freshman, increased her total to 103. It's possible that Blank (pictured) could become the college's all-time leading goal scorer in the team's next match--Sept. 26 at the Aquatic Center v. visiting Cerritos College (3 p.m. start). Blank needs three goals to break Tchougounova's mark.
The Lancers again were in a tight match, closing the gap to one goal before Chaffey added an insurance score with a little more than a minute to play. Milene Minassians added three goals for PCC while Ashli Gonzales also netted a tally. Paloma Barrera and Giselle Mendieta contributed two assists each. Lancers' goalie Shelby Gregg made seven saves.
While PCC is 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCC, the team has closed the gap on top conference opponents. Cerritos was a 12-11 overtime winner over Long Beach, a team PCC lost 7-6 to in the SCC opener. LBCC and Cerritos combined to have won the last 11 conference titles with the Falcons winning last year.
