Blank Ties School Record For Career Goals At 105 In WWP Loss image

Makenzie Blank scored both of the Pasadena City College women's water polo team goals Wednesday in an 11-2, South Coast Conference loss to state No. 3-ranked Cerritos College. With the tallies, Blank tied PCC's all-time goals scoring record at 105 goals, matching the mark set in one season by Lybov Tchougounova in 2007.

Blank, from Temple City High, scored with 5:41 left in the second quarter on a 5-meter penalty shot. She then tied the record with 3:26 left when she took a feed from Paloma Barrera and fired in a power play goal.

Pasadena (2-5, 0-3 in SCC play) had numerous opportunities to score, but were often shut down by Cerritos goalie Sharon Ku, who made 10 saves. Cerritos (10-1, 3-0) pressured the Pasadena defense, but also worked hard for its goals as PCC goalie Shelby Gregg made nine saves. Gregg three times made blocks from less than five meters.

Cerritos was paced by Katherine Gabayeron with five goals and Angelica Hernandez, who had three goals and made a match-high three steals. For PCC, Blank, Ashli Gonzales, and Marisa Rack each recorded two steals. Rack and Blank each were denied on the two best scoring chances in 7-on-7 play by Ku.

The game was physical with 15 exclusions called on the two teams, including two players who were ejected due to reaching the automatic three exclusions (one each for Cerritos and Pasadena).

"Cerritos came out and played its A game against us," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "We made poor selections on our shot attempts. We couldn't say we didn't have opportunities to score. We still have to work on counter attacks. We expect to be ready for them next time."

Blank will go for the outright school record for goals when the Lancers visit El Camino College next Wednesday, October 3. Game time is 3 p.m.
