Potent Pair Propel PCC Women's Soccer Over Compton, 4-0
At the top of the South Coast Conference scorers list, the Pasadena City College women's soccer forward duo of sophomore Vanessa Capra and freshman Nancy Nunez added to their lofty numbers in a 4-0 victory at last-place El Camino College-Compton Center Tuesday.
Nunez and Capra each scored two goals and fed one assist as PCC held on to third place in the SCC. The Lancers are 8-4-2 overall and improved to 4-2-1 to conclude the first of two rounds of conference games. PCC is attempting to make the postseason regional playoffs for the first time since 2007.
In the 13th minute, Nunez benefitted from a long lead kick by goalie Tatiana Sanchez and knocked in PCC's first goal. In the 29th minute, the Lancers hit paydirt when Capra drove down the sideline on an assist from Alexandria Martinez for a 2-0 lead.
The high-scoring pair partnered on the third score in the 59th minute when Capra sped through the middle on a lead pass from Nunez (from Ramona Convent Secondary in Alhambra). Once again the crafty two combined for the fourth goal when Nunez cashed in on a cross from Capra (Eagle Rock High).
Sanchez (Burbank Burroughs High) made 10 saves in recording the shutout victory. The Lancers peppered the Compton net for 21 shots, but goalie Stephanie Pachenco kept the Tartars competitive with 12 saves.
Capra (11 goals) and Nunez (10 goals) each reached double digits. Last season, Capra and Mallory Gutierrez reached double figures in goals as well under third-year head coach Randy Lilavois. You then have to go back to 2002 for the last time two different Lancers reached the 10-goal mark in the same season. Capra has 28 points (including six assists) to lead the conference and Nunez has 23 points (three assists) in trying to catch her teammate.
Capra is the 10th player in PCC history to reach 20 goals (now has 21) in her career and the first since Melissa Fudge accomplished the feat in 2008-2009.
In a SCC game on October 12, first-place Cerritos handed the visiting Lancers a 4-1 defeat. Capra scored PCC's lone goal in the second half. On October 9, Mt. San Antonio ended the Lancers' undefeated streak at Robinson Stadium at eight games (6-0-2) in a 3-2 win. The Mounties jumped ahead 3-0 before PCC rallied with two late goals. Cassandra Orozco scored a goal and an assist and Capra also netted a goal. Cerritos and Mt. SAC top the SCC standings ahead of the Lancers.
On Friday, October 19, PCC will visit El Camino College (Torrance) in a 2 p.m. conference match.
