Water Polo Rallies To Beat SMC, 8-6
The Pasadena City College women's water polo team made it four wins in the last five games after rallying to defeat Santa Monica, 8-6, at the 10th Pasadena Mini Tournament held Friday at the Aquatic Center.
The Lancers, who lost to Los Angeles Valley, 10-3, earlier in the day, fell behind SMC, 4-1, early in the third quarter. At that point, PCC went to a more up-tempo offense and it worked as the Lancers scored five goals in the period.
Santa Monica tied it at 6-6 in the fourth quarter, but PCC (9-16 overall) went ahead for good with 2:18 left when leading scorer Makenzie Blank notched her 81st goal of the season. Blank waited patiently in the center, then fired a shot from about 10 yards out. With 43 seconds left, the Lancers capped the win when Giselle Mendieta picked up her third assist on a feed to Naoni Padilla for the final goal.
Paloma Barrera had perhaps her best game of the season as she scored three goals and made four steals. Freshman Marisa Rack continued her impressive play by matching Barrera on goals (three) and steals (four) plus a block. Lancers' goalie Shelby Gregg made 11 saves.
In the Valley defeat, Rack tallied a pair of goals and Blank had one.
