Volleyball Needs Win In Last Match For SCC Title
The situation is set for the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team to to tie El Camino College for the South Coast Conference title. The Lancers (18-4 overall) are knotted with the Warriors (18-4) for first place in the SCC with identical 12-1 records. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the pressure is on the state No. 9 Lancers to defeat No. 16-ranked Mt. San Antonio in their conference finale. Tip-off for the conference finale is 6 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
El Camino all but has its third straight conference crown locked up after sweeping Mt. San Antonio on Thursday. ECC must defeat lowly LA Trade Tech on Wednesday to win at least a share of championship. A loss by PCC would give El Camino the title outright.
The Lancers, who won their only conference title in the sport in 2009, swept host Cerritos College Friday, 25-13, 25-18, 25-17, at Gahr High (the Falcons temporary home away from home).
Sophomore opposite Yanise Joseph slammed 12 kills and added two assisted blocks to pace the Lancers. Setter Kailey Faust added 31 assists, four kills on dump plays, and two aces. Libero Jennifer Estrada made 20 digs while middle blocker Jackie Valle-Acosta continued to be efficient with nine kills and three blocks. Pasadena made an uncharacteristic 10 errors on serve receives.
"Yanise picked it up for us after the tough loss at El Camino," said PCC head coach Tammy Silva. "We need her to be a hitter for us as an experienced sophomore. Our outside hitters aren't doing enough, making Yanise more of a factor. Kailey continues to stay hot. She's running and mixing up the offense very well and taking over the leadership role as the quarterback for the offense."
On playing Mt. SAC for the title, she said: "We played a tremendous match, one of our best of the season at Mt. SAC in the first round of conference. Really, it's up to us to dictate what happens. If we play to our capabilities, we'll win. If we let Mt. SAC get momentum and stop playing Lancer volleyball, we could be in for a long match."
