Another Day At The Parks For 3-0 Women's Basketball
The Pasadena City College women's basketball team finished 3-0 at the PCC-hosted Veteran's Day Classic, the 2012-13 season-opening round robin tournament held at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium from Nov. 9-11.
The Lancers rallied from a 50-44 deficit with five minutes left to defeat Cypress, 58-52, on Sunday. PCC went on an 11-0 scoring run, including six points scored by tournament MVP Kaitlyn Parks. The 6-foot-4 freshman forward compiled 16 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as she finished with 14 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Shay Jackson added 10 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Kahlia Theus came off the bench to score eight points while sophomore guard Sabrina Martinez added five points, five rebounds and three steals.
For Cypress (1-2), Samantha Soria scored 16 points.
On Saturday, PCC pulled out a 47-46 victory over Irvine Valley. In the choppy triumph, Parks pulled down 15 rebounds and scored seven points. No Lancer reached double figures in scoring as sophomore guard Stella Ghazarian (fouled out just two minutes into the second half) and freshman center Brianna Simmons each tallied nine points.
With 3:40 left, Pasadena took the lead for good, 45-44, on a basket by Simmons and that was followed by a Sarah Jackson layup with 2:58 remaining. Jackson, a reserve player from Bonita High, showed her talents by singing the national anthem prior to the team's game v. Cypress.
Next up for the Lancers is the Saddleback Tournament Nov. 16-18.
