Best Year By Women's Soccer Since 2005 Nets All-SCC Loot
An outstanding season by the Pasadena City College women's soccer team resulted in the Lancers receiving three All-South Coast Conference First Team selections and three more chosen to the Second Team.
PCC finished in second place in the powerful SCC, its highest finish since taking third in 2005. The team's 12 victories (12-5-5 overall) were also a program high since the '05 season and the most under third-year head coach Randy Lilavois. The Lancers also made it to the Southern California Regional Playoffs for the first time in five years.
Making the all-conference First Team were three sophomores who all were key figures in the resurgence of the Lancers this year. Defender Hallie White (Burroughs High, four goals, four assists) and forward Vanessa Capra (Eagle Rock High, 14 goals, 11 assists, team-high 39 points) were each picked All-SCC First Team for the second straight season. Transfer forward Nancy Nunez (Ramona Convent Secondary) tied SCC MVP Lauren Nanez of Cerritos for the conference goal-scoring lead with 15 goals.
White, arguably the most talented defender in the conference in her two seasons, often controlled the tempo of games with her long kicking ability as well as her 6-foot, frame intimidating opponent forwards. White was often used on offense due to her strong throw-in ability and her accuracy on free kicks.
Capra was one of the fastest players in the league. Her 68 career points moved her to No. 6 on the college's all-time scoring list. Her 25 career goals placed her seventh and her 18 assists is third most in PCC history behind career leaders Kelley Hull (1997/99) and Carrie Valentine (1999-2000), who both reached 23 helpers. Capra led the Lancers in overall scoring in both of her seasons and in assists in both years. She finished second behind Nanez in league scoring this year.
Making the All-SCC Second Team for the Lancers were sophomore defender Heather French (Village Christian High, three goals, one assist), freshman midfielder Cassandra Saavedra (Alverno High, 13 goals, two assists), and frosh defender Danielle Busta (Crescenta Valley High, one goal, three assists).
French came all the way back from the 2009 team as she overcame injuries to become an integral player on the PCC defensive end. Saavedra put on a clinic with her ability to score goals on headers, and was the team's most effective offensive player in the season's final weeks. Busta solidified the team's defense as a steady performer. Freshman goalie Tatiana Sanchez (Burroughs High) received All-SCC honorable mention after recording 87 saves and a 1.13 goals against average.
Defender Bianca Mercado (Maranatha High) and Tanya Pila (Sierra Vista) each finished their PCC careers as two-year lettermen.
