Swanegan Scores 35 In Men's Hoops Win Over LAVC image

Pasadena City College sophomore guard Mike Swanegan became just the sixth Lancers men's basketball player in the last 10 years to score 35 points in a game as PCC defeated Los Angeles Valley, 92-80, in the opening round of the 40th Santa Barbara City College Classic Thursday night.

The Lancers (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak and advance to Friday's championship semifinals against South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College at 9 p.m.

Swanegan (pictured) made 12 of 18 shots from the floor, including an nifty 6-for-8 for long distance threes. He converted 5-for-6 from the line and averaged better than a point a minute (played 33 minutes). He joined an elite group of PCC high scorers in the past decade to reach 35 or more points in Givon Crump (39 last season), Shawn Hampton (38 in 2010), Harold Cleveland (48, PCC record in 2007), Daniel Malwah (36 in 2006), and Terrell Stovall (41 in 2004).

The Lancers swarmed the Monarchs, making 22 steals and forcing 36 turnovers. Sophomore guard Evan Brooks put on a defensive clinic with eight steals to go with his 17 points. Reserve point guard Jeffrey Dockett added six points, six steals and six assists.

PCC limited its turnovers to just 17. Jumping out to a 51-37 halftime lead, the Lancers built it to as high as 24 points at 81-57.

For LA Valley, Alex Smith and Andrew Estes each scored 25 points.
