Hutto-Patterson Gym Floor Gets Makeover
For the first time since it opened in 1999 at Pasadena City College, the center competition floor of Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium is getting a complete makeover. The home floor design has changed dramatically to reflect a traditional look.
Pacific Floor Company of Chatsworth began work on the project on Dec. 10 and is expected to be finished by New Year's Day. The gym floor is being sanded and then painted. The work does not affect any PCC home basketball games although it has transplanted the teams to practice off-campus at nearby Caltech.
While the floor has been refinished and painted several times, this is the first time that the college chose to change the basketball court design. The new look does not contain the Lancers' athletic logo, which is likely to be replaced by 2013-14, according to PCC athletic director John Woods.
"We had coaches and staff give their input on the new look of the floor, including both head basketball coaches," Woods said. "I think the end result will be pleasing to the fans. The floor is not busy looking and has an old-school feel to it."
While students will be able to use the floor for college classes beginning on Jan. 7 (the start of the Spring semester), the first contest for fans to view the new-look HP gym will be Wednesday, Jan. 9. The Lancers host a basketball doubleheader with the men's team opening South Coast Conference play and playing its 2012-2013 home opener v. Los Angeles Southwest College at 5 p.m. The state No. 6-ranked PCC women's team then takes on El Camino College in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
