Another Home Shutout For Surging PCC Softball
In the two previous seasons since the Pasadena City College softball team began playing home games at Robinson Park, the Lancers were often trying to avoid being on the wrong side of the mercy rule or scratching to just score a run. So far in 2013, it's the opponents who can't score on the Lancers, at least at PCC's off-campus home diamond.
PCC made it three shutout wins in three home games Tuesday in blanking Los Angeles Pierce College, 2-0. Cierra Newton (Marshall Fundamental) twirled her second shutout, allowing five hits, one walk, striking out while receiving flawless defense behind her.
The Lancers are 4-5 this season, already almost half way to the number of victories the program achieved in each of the last two seasons (nine wins in 2011 and nine in 2012).
Offensively, PCC scored its runs in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Katelyn Thordarson and a line-drive RBI single by red-hot second baseman Audrey Serna. Pierce pitcher Katelyn Vogler would not allow another run in scattering seven PCC hits over six innings.
Centerfielder Ashley Shaneberger batted 2-for-3 and stole two bases while designated player Melissa Izumida went 2-for-3 with a double.
Serna has been the team's early-season hitting sensation as she is batting .517 in nine games (15-for-29) with two home runs and 11 RBI. The Temple City High product launched a grand slam in PCC's 13-5 loss at Citrus College on Feb. 2. Most of Serna's basehits have been hard hit liners.
Thordarson, from Maranatha High, also has hit well with a .390 average and a team-high 13 RBI. The Lancers have a .339 team batting average, a far cry from most recent seasons.
"Audrey has been stinging the ball for us," said PCC second-year head coach Brittany Williams. "It's our defense that I'm most pleased with, though. We are making the routine plays and the pitchers are getting quick outs. We need to keep that faster pace flow."
The Lancers next play at Chaffey College on Friday, Feb. 8 in a 3 p.m. first pitch.
