For most teams, one track and field meet certainly doesn't define a season. But the results of one meet can often dictate the course of a season. The 2013 Pasadena City College women's track and field established itself as a conference and state contender with its showing Friday at the Mt. SAC Season Opener meet held at Mt. San Antonio College.

Behind a pair of first place finishes by middle distance runner Diane Lombardi, the Lancers put on a clinic with six event victories, all in track races in one of the finest meet performances in PCC women's track and field history.

Sprinter Lai Launi Cox (Upland High) won the 100 meter dash at 13.16 seconds, Breanna Clark (Dorsey) captured the 200 meters in 26.15 seconds, and Omhunique Browne (San Marino High) was victorious in the 400 meters at 60.13 seconds. All three are Lancers' freshmen. The sophomore Lombardi (Crescenta Valley) won the 800 meters (2:29.16) and easily bolted to first in the 1,500 meters at 5:02.59, nearly four seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

PCC also won the 4x100 meter relay race as the squad of Clark, Browne, Marquetta Stokes (Oakland Tech) and Taylor Matthews (Rancho Verde) scored a time of 48.88 seconds.

In the javelin, Lancer Rossha Harris (Lou Dantzler Prep, Los Angeles), placed second with a throw of 34.18 meters, the best of any freshman thrower by all colleges participating. Harris was also sixth in the shot put (9.70 meters).

PCC's 4x400 relay squad of Sojourner Marable, (Bishop Alemany), Browne, Matthews, and Clark took third at 4:13.46. In the second heat, another Lancers squad won that race (4:14.86) and took fourth overall behind the racing of Erica Payne (Monrovia High), Stokes, Cox, and Sophia Amodia (Glendale). In the 4x100 relay, the team of Cox, Marable, Amodia and Payne placed a strong third at 51.29. Amodia was fourth overall in the 200 (27.23) and second in the second heat.

The Lancers have 27 athletes already listed on the official Direct Athletics roster site. In roster numbers, it's easily the largest women's track and field team assembled in school history.

PCC third-year head coach Larry Wade and distance coach Armand Crespo know they have put together a formidable group.

"It wasn't that we wanted to carry a lot of athletes for numbers sake," Wade said. "We want athletes who can score for us at meets. We also want to cover as many events as we can because every event has a potential for team points. We're in a position to accomplish some big feats here. This is what we've been striving to achieve at PCC."

Meet team scoring in California Community College track and field only takes place at the conference (South Coast Conference for PCC), Southern California, and CCCAA state championship meets.

PCC will participate at the Cerritos Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 15-16 at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
