Records Keep Falling For PCC Women's Swim Fearless Four

Records Keep Falling For PCC Women's Swim Fearless Four image

With just four swimmers on a seven-person roster, it was perhaps fitting that the Pasadena City College women's swimming and diving team posted a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay Friday during the Lancers' double dual home meet against Mt. San Antonio and Chaffey Colleges. Now the "Fearless Four" of PCC can all attach their name to one all-time mark as phenom newcomer Emily Frederick, freshman Arolyn Basham, sophomore Paige Watroba, and freshman Shannon Cheung recorded a 1:55.55

The record was one of 10 event wins posted by the Lancers, but because team points are gained heavily based on the number of swimmers and their placings from second place and below, they were beaten in the team placing by both Mt. SAC, 144-113, and Chaffey, 150-116. Mt. SAC edged Chaffey, 142-136, in the South Coast Conference opening meet for all three schools.

The medley win snapped a 10-year-old PCC standard set in 2003 of 1:56.48 and swam by the unit of Lorean Mapp, Amy Williamson, Andrea Polchow, and Carla Correa.

Basham broke the PCC record in winning the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:11.73, just slipping past the 1:11.81 mark set last year by Giselle Mendieta. Frederick, who broke five PCC records in the opening two meets, snapped her own school record set last week in taking first place in the 100-freestyle. Frederick swam 53.86 seconds, .04 better than her mark at the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Other PCC wins were accomplished by Cheung in the 50-backstroke (29.61), 50-freestyle (25.40), and 100-backstroke (1:04.51); Basham in the 50-breaststroke (33.48); Frederick in the 500-freestyle (5:26.20) and 100 individual medley (1:01.84); and Watroba in the 50-butterfly (29.08).

The team had an 11th win taken away as their 3:48.41 mark in the 400-freestyle relay was disqualified by the meet referee.

In combined 1- and 3-meter diving, Lancer Gwen McKinley placed fourth with 128.05 points. Watroba took second place in both the 200-freestyle and 100-butterfly while Basham was third in the 1,000-freestyle at 11:31.39.

The Lancers will be back in action on Mar. 8-9 at the Chaffey Invitational.
