Badminton Pushed By ELAC, But Triumph, 13-8
Host East Los Angeles College challenged the four-time defending South Coast Conference champion Pasadena City College women's badminton team Friday, but the Lancers prevailed, 13-8. It was PCC's 37th consecutive conference victory.
While PCC holds a 16-match win streak over the Huskies, its SCC rival has three times lost by a 1-point margin to the Lancers and played another close one here.
Pasadena's No. 1 player Angie Ortiz put together a polished effort as she recorded singles wins over ELAC's No. 1 Cherry Lai, 21-10, 21-10, and No. 2 Shirley Su, 21-5, 21-5. In No. 1 doubles with fellow sophomore Grace Espinoza, she helped win two more matches in defeating the Huskies' No. 1 pair of Lai and Yuki Tai, 22-20, 21-15, and downing Su and Suki Kwan, 21-8, 21-7.
The Lancers' No. 3 freshman player Shaghig Avedisian and No. 5 sophomore Alyssa Boyt also picked up two singles victories each. Boyt had an epic win over ELAC No. 5 Chuyan Lao, rallying after losing the first set, 29-31, to win in three, taking the last two sets, 21-13, 21-12. PCC's No. 4 freshman Alejandra Palacios scored a key victory in three sets over Kwan, 16-21, 21-16, 21-11.
"Those are the matches you have to win to keep a streak going," PCC head coach Bill Sanchez said. "We lost two doubles and that meant singles became our go-to area for points. We went 8-4 in singles and if those three-set matches go another way, we could have been in trouble. Our sophomores have been showing the freshmen what they have to do in order to stay consistent. We are working hard for our points. The other teams aren't going to hand us matches."
On Wednesday, March 20, PCC (2-2 overall, 2-0 in conference) will play its first home match of the 2013 season when it faces El Camino College-Compton Center in a 3 p.m. contest at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
