After tying a 17-year-old school record in the 50-yard breaststroke in her very first collegiate meet, freshman Arolyn Basham has continued to practice hard for the Pasadena City College women's swim team. Basham found a challenge Friday in Long Beach City College swimmer Jackie Rojas and the pair's duel pushed Basham to the record outright at 32.78 seconds set during the Lancers-hosted double dual meet.

PCC split the South Coast Conference meet defeating Rio Hondo, 93-35, and falling to Long Beach, 137.5-74.5.

Basham snapped the record she tied in the season's opening week and was originally set by Mary Morgan in 1996 (32.84) by .06 of a second. She needed to approach that record in order to beat LBCC's Rojas (32.91) to the wall.

From La Salle High, Basham scored another event win in the 100 individual medley on a 1:05.64 mark. She was second to Rojas in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.99).

Lancer Shannon Cheung also had a big afternoon, finishing in a dead heat with Long Beach's Christine Maclennan as they shared first place in the 50 freestyle with identical 25.29 times. Cheung was also victorious in the 50 backstroke at 29.66 (she set the school record in that event a week ago at 28.89). An American student from South Pasadena who attended high school in China, Cheung made it three event wins by edging Maclennan in the 100 freestyle, 54.96 to 55.46.

Sophomore Paige Watroba won the 100 butterfly (1:04.76), took a close second in the 50 butterfly (29.76, beaten by LBCC's Mackenzie Woolvett's 29.33), and placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:09.65).

Diver Gwen McKinley was all by herself in the 1&3 meter board competition and her 120.35 points resulted in an event victory.

PCC head coach Terry Stoddard reported that his top swimmer Emily Frederick, an honorable mention for the CCCSIA State Athlete of the Month for February, will be out of action for possibly three weeks due to a back injury. Frederick is a part of breaking eight school records in a spectacular freshman season.
