Thirty-Nine Straight SCC Wins For PCC Badminton

Thirty-Nine Straight SCC Wins For PCC Badminton image

It was easy sailing for the Pasadena City College badminton team as it rolled to another win on Friday, defeating El Camino College, 19-2, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. This 39th consecutive conference victory for the Lancers improves the team’s record to 4-2 overall, and undefeated at 4-0 in the South Coast Conference.

The Lancers’ efforts were eased as El Camino (1-3, both overall/conference) only had four players and gave up six walkover forfeits, two of which that were doubles matches. Also, sophomores Grace Espinoza and Angie Ortiz returned to the court after resting on Wednesday and helped propel Pasadena to the win.

Espinoza, as PCC’s No. 1 player, defeated El Camino’s No. 2 Callie Rodela, 21-7, 21-4. She paired up with Ortiz as Pasadena’s No. 2 pair, defeating the Warriors’ No. 1 duo of Corinne Belandres and Rodela, 21-11, 21-15. Later in the event, however, Espinoza had to forfeit her match due to a leg injury v. ECC’s No. 1 singles player Belandres, giving PCC one of its two losses on the day. Espinoza led 21-12 and 10-5 in the second set, but could not continue at that point.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Alice Liew and Shaghig Avedisian, both freshmen, showed tremendous promise in defeating Belandres-Rodela, 21-12, 21-8.

Ortiz collected a pair of singles wins by defeating Belandres, 21-14, 21-12, and Rodela, 21-8, 21-6. Liew, No. 5 Alyssa Boyt, and No. 6 Alejandra Palacios each picked up a singles victory.

The Lancers will finish this homestand on Wednesday at the H-P Gym when they take on the Huskies of East Los Angeles at 3 p.m.
