Cheung, Basham Score Triples At SCC Double Dual
Pasadena City College women's swim team freshmen Shannon Cheung and Arolyn Basham each recorded three event victories in a South Coast Conference double dual meet held at Cerritos College March 28.
As a team, the Lancers' lack of numbers resulted in losing to Cerritos, 164-66, and against LA Trade Tech, 98-81. PCC's dual record is 2-6, but the individual performances of such swimmers as Cheung, Basham and the injured Emily Frederickhave made this a memorable record-setting year for the Lancers. Pasadena has broken 11 school records thus far.
Although no PCC records fell at this meet, Cheung continued her outstanding sprint swimming as she captured wins in the 50-yard backstroke (30.48 seconds), 50 freestyle (25.42), and 100 freestyle (55.88). Basham, from La Salle High, was just as explosive in winning a close one in the 50-breaststroke, beating out Cerritos swimmer Katherine Gabayeron, 33.68 to 34.14. She had an easier time in a near 7-second triumph in the 100 breaststoke (1:14.83) and taking the 100 individual medley at 1:07.62.
Sophomore Paige Watroba placed second in three events, including a 1:04.81 in the 100 butterfly, a 29.59 in the 50 butterfly, and a 2:09.61 in the 200 freestyle.
The Lancers host the 13th Pasadena Invitational on Friday-Saturday, April 5-6 at the PCC Aquatic Center. Pasadena also takes part in the SCC Championships (diving at El Camino College, April 12-13) at Chaffey College from April 18-20.
