Frederick Breaks 50,100 Freestyle, Helps Set 3 Women Relay Records At 13th Pasadena Invitational

Frederick Breaks 50,100 Freestyle, Helps Set 3 Women Relay Records At 13th Pasadena Invitational image

After recovering from a back injury that left her out of the water for two weeks, Pasadena City College women's swimmer Emily Frederick is all the way back and returning to her sensational freshman-season form. Frederick broke her own school record in winning the 100-yard freestyle, broke her 50 freestyle record, and helped snap three school relay records to highlight the Lancers' performances at the 13th Pasadena Invitational held Friday-Saturday.

Frederick swam a 53.46 seconds time to hold off Diablo Valley's Taylor Henry (53.84) at the finish to snap her own record for the second time this year. On March 1, she swam 53.86 during a conference dual meet after originally breaking the record with a 53.90 mark at the Mt. SAC Invitational on Feb. 23. The old school record was Julia Warden's 54.31 set in 2011.

In the 50 freestyle, Frederick took fourth, but did so in snapping her PCC record in that event at 24.91 (24.98 performed at the Chaffey Invitational on March 8). That race was the most speedy in the meet's history as both the top two finishers, Henry and Orange Coast's Mackenzie Bailie each broke the meet record at 24.28 and 24.41, respectively.

Frederick later notched her amazing 10th school record as part of the team's 3:47.52 time in taking second place in the 400 freestyle relay. That record had lasted a decade, set by the 2003 South Coast Conference champion Lancers of 3:48.05. In fact, the foursome of Frederick, Shannon Cheung, Arolyn Basham and sophomore Paige Watroba now own four relay records originally set by the '03 PCC squad.

Earlier in the meet, the four busted last year's team record set in the 400 medley relay at 4:14.61 (third place), faster than the old mark of 4:16.97 (Watroba was a member of both of those records). At the beginning of the meet, the four smashed their own record in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing fourth but at a new PCC standard of 1:43.42, beating the 1:44.10 they swam at the Chaffey Invitational. Frederick's 50 split was a blazing 24.07, not a record because it was done after the opening leg.

As a team, PCC finished a remarkable fifth place out of 15 colleges participating. The team scored 386 points, but with just five swimmers/divers, and were only five points from taking fourth place (Chaffey, 390). Diablo Valley won the women's team title with Orange Coast placing second and Mt. San Antonio third. (complete results at the link near bottom of release).

Frederick placed second overall in the 100 butterfly with a 1:00.04 time. She was oh so close to two other school records, missing here of catching Malia Garcia's 1:00.02 set in 2008. In the 50 butterfly, she placed fourth at 27.26, but not enough to reach Garcia's 27.09. She also came close to breaking her own PCC mark in the 100 individual medley, but her second place finish of 1:01.54 was just .31 of a second slower. Diablo Valley swimmer Shaila Yoder edged her at the wall to win the event at 1:01.54.

Cheung picked up the team's only other event  victory, winning the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:13.46. Cheung got into a duel with Orange Coast's Nicole Buck and out-touched her by .27. Cheung took second in the 100 backstroke, placing right behind Buck, at 1:03.37. In the 500 freestyle, Cheung also had to settle for second place despite her 5:17.84 time as Chaffey's Karla Fuertez just was a hand-touch ahead at 5:17.75. Cheung, who was raised in South Pasadena and attended an American high school in China, also placed third in the 50 backstroke (29.07).

Freshman Gwen McKinley made her first attempt at 3-meter diving and placed eighth with 135.85 points. She was also eighth in the 1-meter event. PCC head coach Terry Stoddard said that McKinley has made great strides in diving and that her points gained helped the team immensely.

Basham took fifth in the 50 breaststroke at 33.36 and did the same in the 100 breaststroke at 1:12.08. Basham already has the school records in both events, but her times here were each a bit slower.

The Lancers will participate at the South Coast Conference Championships April 18-20 at Chaffey College. The CCCAA State Championships are April 25-27 at East Los Angeles College's swim stadium.
