PCC Track's Cano Wins Steeplechase At Mt. SAC Relays
Pasadena City College men's track and field runner Kevin Cano rallied from way back in the field to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 55th Mt. San Antonio Relays held April 13 in Walnut. Cano, a sophomore, posted his personal best time of 9 minutes, 37.4 seconds to place him sixth on the state list.
Cano (Montebello High) was eighth in the first third of the race, then moved up to sixth with 1,000 meters left in the race. Despite a 10-second lead by Los Angeles Valley's Angel Alcantar, Cano grabbed fourth with 600 meters to go, then used a strong final kick to beat Alcantar by a second at the finish line.
Steven Williams placed second in the high jump (6-feet-8) and continues to be No. 2 in the state due to a jump made at the Pasadena Games of 6-8.75. Chineek Favors ran his season-best time of 48.35 seconds to take second in his heat and sixth overall in the 400 meters. Favors moved up to No. 12 on the state list.
Caleb Wood, who won the javelin event at the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational on April 6, fired his season-best throw of 177-7 to place fifth at Mt. SAC. Wood is 14th on the state list.
In the women's competition at the Mt. San Antonio Relays, Lancer Omhunique Browne (San Marino High) won the 100-meter dash easily with a mark of 11.70 seconds. Browne, currently second in the state in the event has run faster at 11.63 (Ben Brown Invitational on March 9). Browne didn't run the 200, but remains the state leader in that event with a 23.77 mark, performed at the Pasadena Games.
Kia Smith placed third in the 100 hurdles at 15.07, .10 of a second slower than her No. 7 state time in the event. Breanna Clark took fourth in the 400 meters (57.58), but that is more than a half-second slower than her best time (state No. 10). Sophia Amodia placed fifth in the 100 hurdles behind Smith, but her 15.27 time was her personal best and moved her to 13th in the state.
The 4x100 relay team placed second with a season-best time of 47.28 seconds behind the sprinting of Clark, Browne, Smith and Taylor Matthews. The Lancers are third in the state, but No. 1 in the SoCal region.
